Are Tax Relief Companies Legit?

One of the biggest complaints I hear from victims of tax relief companies is:

“After I paid, they stopped communicating with me.”

That does not happen in my practice.

When someone hires me and they want an update on their case, I contact them within 24 hours — not weeks later. And my clients have access to a secure online portal where they can see the latest updates, documents, notices, and actions on their case at any time. They never have to wonder, “Is anything being done?” They can see the work in motion.

There Are Good Professionals — But Here’s the Difference

Tax relief has its share of scammers, sales mills, and marketing companies — but there are also actual IRS tax professionals who do the work the right way. The problem is most taxpayers don’t know how to tell the difference.

Here is the one rule I wish every taxpayer understood:

If you never speak to the person actually representing you — you are not being represented.

If the only people you talk to are:

  • a salesperson

  • an “assistant” who can’t answer technical questions

  • a “case manager” who is not licensed

…that is a red flag.

Real IRS representation requires direct communication with the licensed professional who is signing their name to your case. When someone works with me, communication is direct. The only time someone else contacts my clients is to give a quick update or request documents — never to substitute for me.

The Bottom Line

Are tax relief companies legit?

Not the way most taxpayers assume. Most of them sell hope on the front end and deliver excuses on the back end. And the people doing the work inside are often the least qualified to handle serious IRS matters.

If you are going to hire someone to deal with the IRS, do it with someone you can speak to directly — not a salesperson.

Because once the IRS is involved, “someone will call you back” is not a strategy. It’s a warning sign.
